Shedinja Has Exactly 1 HP and It Cannot Be Raised
The only Pokémon in the series with a hard-coded health value, an ability that makes most attacks bounce off, and a way of joining your party that nothing else does.
Every Pokémon in the series has an HP stat that grows with level, effort training and individual values. Shedinja does not. Its HP is 1 at level 1 and 1 at level 100, no matter what you do to it, and that is not a very low stat — it is a rule written specifically for this one creature.
The number is hard-coded
| HP | 1 — fixed, ignores EVs, IVs and level |
|---|---|
| Ability | Wonder Guard — only super-effective moves can damage it |
| Base stat total | 236 — lowest of any fully evolved Pokémon |
Feed it vitamins, train it perfectly, take it to a hundred: still 1. No other species has its health handled as an exception in the code, and it means Shedinja is the only Pokémon for which chip damage is lethal damage. Sandstorm kills it. Poison kills it. Recoil, a burn, one point of anything at all — it all does the same thing.
Which is what makes the ability so strange
Wonder Guard blocks every attacking move that is not super-effective. Against the wrong team, Shedinja is invincible in a way nothing else in the game is — not resistant, immune. An opponent with no answer to a Ghost/Bug typing simply cannot touch it, and it can sit there and win a fight it should have no business being in.
Against the right team it dies to the first thing that connects. There is no middle. Shedinja is the only Pokémon whose matchup chart has two states — untouchable and dead — with nothing in between, and that is the whole design: a creature made entirely of one enormous strength and one absolute weakness, with no body in the middle to absorb anything.
How you get one
You do not catch Shedinja and you do not evolve into it. Nincada evolves into Ninjask at level 20 — and if you have a spare slot in your party and a spare Poké Ball in your bag, Shedinja also appears. Not instead. As well.
It is the discarded shell of the evolution, and the game hands it to you as a second Pokémon, quietly, in a slot you did not ask it to fill. Most players who have met one met it by accident and had to work out where it came from.
And then the dex ruins it
“A most peculiar Pokémon that can float in air without moving its wings. It steals the spirit of anyone peering into its hollow body from its back.”
The empty husk you got for free has an opinion about being looked at. Ruby adds that its hard body does not move at all and that it is a discarded shell — so the thing sitting in your party is not alive in the way the rest of your team is, has one point of health it can never gain, is immune to most of the world, and takes something from you if you look inside it.
It is the strangest entry in a game aimed at children, and the reason it works is that every single part of it is mechanically true. Shedinja really is hollow. The 1 HP really is permanent. The game is not being atmospheric; it is describing its own rules.
