Ditto Can Breed With Almost Every Pokémon in the Game
Including species with no gender at all. It is the single most important creature in competitive breeding and the dex never mentions why.
Ditto is a purple blob with a face, 48 in every stat, and one move. It is also the most mechanically significant Pokémon in the entire series for anyone who has ever tried to build a competitive team, and the reason has nothing to do with battling.
The rule it breaks
Normally, breeding requires two Pokémon that share an egg group and have opposite genders. That is a real constraint — it means you can only pass down moves and stats within a family, and it means genderless species cannot breed at all.
Ditto ignores all of it. It can pair with almost any species regardless of egg group, and crucially it can pair with genderless Pokémon — the Magnemite line, the Voltorb line, Beldum, the golems. Without Ditto, those species have no route to inherited moves, inherited natures or good individual values whatsoever. They are simply whatever you happened to catch.
What that means in practice
Every competitively bred team in the history of the games runs through this blob. It is how a Beldum gets a perfect stat spread. It is how a foreign-language Ditto becomes the standard tool for improving breeding odds, because pairing parents from different game languages raises the number of inherited stats. There is an entire economy of trading Dittos that exists purely because of a mechanic the games never explain to you.
And it is doing this with a stat line of 48 across the board and one move, Transform, which copies the opponent — stats, moves and all — but leaves it with 1 PP in everything and no way to win a long fight.
The dex is not shy about what it is
“Capable of copying an enemy’s genetic code to instantly transform itself into a duplicate of the enemy.”
Genetic code. The very first entry the species ever had reaches for genetics rather than illusion or disguise, which is a strikingly specific choice for a 1996 children's game and quietly does the work of explaining the breeding rule. Ditto is not shapeshifting; it is rewriting what it is.
“Its transformation ability is perfect. However, if made to laugh, it can’t maintain its disguise.”
That one has nothing to do with mechanics and I include it because it is the funniest sentence in the Pokédex. The most genetically flexible organism in the setting, capable of becoming anything alive, defeated by a joke.
The bit that never gets said out loud
The games are careful never to spell out what Ditto is doing at the day care. It copies genetic code; it can pair with things that have no gender; the offspring is always the other parent's species. Put those three facts side by side and the mechanic is doing something the writing has deliberately declined to describe.
Which is probably the right call for the audience. But it does mean the most-used breeding tool in the franchise works on a principle the franchise has never once explained.
